Amherst Police apprehend man driving stolen vehicle

AMHERST, N.S. — A 23-year old male faces multiple charges after a vehicle pursuit ended near an East Pleasant Street residence on Wednesday night.

Shortly before 9 pm, an off-duty Amherst police officer had observed a male acting suspiciously at the Irving gas station on South Albion Street.

The officer ran the license plate of the vehicle that the male was driving and discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of the Dartmouth area.

Officers in the area began to actively search for the vehicle which was later spotted on Church Street. A vehicle stop was initiated by police however the vehicle sped away from the scene as soon as the officer stepped out of the vehicle.

Officers and members of the Cumberland Integrated Street Crime section pursued the vehicle which ended up entering a property on East Pleasant Street and got stuck in the soft ground. The male bailed out of the vehicle and fled to a nearby wooded area.

Officers engaged in a foot pursuit and apprehended the male as he had attempted to conceal himself in the woods.

The man is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, flight from police, obstructing police, three breaches of a recognizance order, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order and driving without a licence.
