Amherst mourning loss of community leader

AMHERST – Amherst is mourning the passing of a one of its community leaders.

Dwight Jones passed away Friday. His celebration of life is Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Amherst.

Dwight Jones was a longtime employee of the town’s recreation department as well as a past-president of the Amherst Rotary Club.

Jones died Friday following an illness.

The Amherst man brought the Canadian slo-pitch championships to Amherst in the mid-1990s and was active in golf and basketball as a player, coach and administrator as well as playing a lead role in the former Amherst Sports Awards program that recognized sports volunteers and featured a celebrity dinner.

He was president of the Amherst Golf Club and was active with the Nova Scotia Golf Association while coaching numerous basketball teams including the ARHS Vikings, the Nova Scotia midget boy’s team and co-coached the juvenile team.

Besides Rotary, he was active the RCMP Auxiliary and was a member of the Nova Scotia Highlanders D Company.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday at Amherst First Baptist at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clarence Clarke officiating.

Donations can be made in Jones’ memory to the Viking Alumni.
