AMHERST – Amherst is getting in the Earth Day mood by hosting a series of community events beginning with a student cleanup and continuing with a community clean-up day on Saturday.

On Thursday, students are being challenged to clean up around their schools, while on Friday businesses are being challenged to clean up around their workplaces and post photos to show what they have done.

Already Taylor Ford Amherst is challenging other businesses on Robert Angus Drive to clean up the ditches and along the roadside.

On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Community Clean-up Day will encourage individuals, friends, families, service clubs and community groups to grab some bags and clean up around their neighbourhoods.

The event is being supported by the Cumberland Joint Services Management Authority, the Town of Amherst, Miller Waste Systems, the SOAR Community Health Board, Communities in Bloom and the Great Nova Scotia Pick Me Up.

It is intended to be an environmental initiative to help promote environmental awareness within our community and increase community involvement while getting active and tidying up Amherst.

The litter pickup is a great way to get started on a spring clean-up for Amherst and residents are encouraged to carry out any tasks that help to improve the community like raking up leaves, cleaning storefront windows or cleaning out closets and donating unused clothing to a used clothing drop off box.
