WEST AMHERST, N.S. — A single-vehicle collision early Saturday resulted in one person being airlifted to hospital in Halifax.

RCMP said officers from the Cumberland detachment and the Amherst Police Department responded to the crash on the Southampton Road at 2:21 a.m.

Upon arriving on the scene, officers found two injured men on the road and a severely damaged vehicle on its side. Police determined the driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and struck a culvert.

The driver was showing signs of impairment by alcohol.

Officers and an RCMP police dog searched the area for additional passengers, but didn’t locate anyone else.

Paramedics cared for both the driver and passenger, who were transported to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre with the passenger being taken to hospital in Halifax by LifeFlight.

An RCMP collision analyst was called to examine the scene and the road was closed for several hours.

Cumberland District RCMP is continuing its investigation.
