UPPER NAPPAN, N.S. – When Pride Week comes to Cumberland County next summer pride flags will fly throughout Cumberland County.
During the most recent meeting of county council, councillors were asked to select one of three options for flying of flags for approved community organizations.
The first option was to purchase and install three flag poles - one at the Upper Nappan Service Centre, one at the Parrsboro Service Centre, and one at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre - at an estimated cost of between $10,000 and $15,000.
The second option was not to purchase flag poles but, instead, use a flag pole already designated for another flag – the municipal flag pole at the Upper Nappan Service Centre, the provincial flag pole at the Parrsboro Service Centre, and the federal flag pole at the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre.
The reason for those choices is that there are currently three flag poles at the Upper Nappan Service Centre, two in Parrsboro, and one at the community centre in Springhill.
The third option was not to purchase flag poles, but, instead, designate the Upper Nappan Service Centre as the single location to fly flags from community organizations, with the municipal flag pole designated as the official special flag pole for the municipality.
Councillors choose option number two, and made a motion to amend the flag policy to reflect their choice. They then passed a second motion to adopt the amended flag policy.
