AMHERST – Bikes, kites and more will be in Dickey Park on Friday as Amherst kicks off a summer that celebrates art, culture and fun.
As part of the Celebrate Summer Kickoff, the town and Amherst Police Department will host a free community bike rodeo at the park between 5 and 7 p.m.
A Trail Flow Portable Park, which simulates elements found on a real mountain bike trail, will be set up as part of the rodeo. It is designed for riders of all skill levels.
The police department will also have a mini bike obstacle course set up. There children can learn their hand signals and other bike safety tips.
Participants in the rodeo are required to wear a bike helmet.
In addition, Atlantic Kite Festivals of Halifax will be at the park putting on a kite flying demonstration between 5 and 8 p.m. They will also give members of the public an opportunity to fly a kite.
In conjunction with these two events, the town will be hosting a Luau Dance Party between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Music will be provided by a disc jockey and the summer “A” team will be leading participants in a game of limbo. Other games like washer toss and lawn Jenga will also challenge participants.
People will also have the opportunity to get a sparkle tattoo, have their picture taken in a Hawaiian-themed photo booth, make crafts and paint sea shells.
The summer of art, culture and fun will continue on June 29 when the Atlantic Canadian Military History Association stages a three-day Second World War encampment at the Cumberland County Museum.
On June 30, at about 10 a.m., 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles participating in the Great Race will drive through Amherst.
A day later, Amherst will host Canada Day celebrations in Victoria Square from 11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be games, bungee, an inflatable obstacle course, music and food. There will also be fireworks at dusk.
