PUGWASH, N.S. — Bethlehem is coming to Pugwash tonight.

The event from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature all seven churches in the villages coming together to celebrate the festive season.

"The goal is to help people get into the Christmas spirit," organizer Bert McWade said. "It's a great event for the community to bring everyone together and celebrate Christmas and what it's all about."

McWade said the farmers' market that opened last year is a perfect venue for the night. Previously, the event was held it was on Water Street with several hundred people participating.

There will be an opening play with the Cumberland Performing Arts Players.

Shepherds will guide people through the streets and Mary and Joseph will be in the stable in the manger.

There will be children’s activities, free pony rides and an inn with free warm drinks.

Seven area churches have come together to recreate the old city of Bethlehem.

"It'll be like going back 2,000 years to the birth of Jesus Christ," McWade said. "We recently had the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah come to the churches to announce the arrival of Jesus. The village will be transformed into Bethlehem."

Bethlehem Live will coincide with the village light-up and caroling that takes place at 5:30 p.m. while the weekend will be the annual Christmas by the Sea with Santa Claus at the village commission hall and numerous discounts at local businesses.

There will be also be the Christmas Market at Pugwash District High School on Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with more than 40 vendors with unique handmade gifts and local seasonal treats from baking to chocolates to homemade candy, fine art, fibre arts, home décor and more.
