AMHERST, N.S. – To be the best should be the aim of every person on the planet.

It’s something Springhill native Ryan Reynolds believes every single morning he opens his eyes and begins a new day. It’s also a message he spreads through East Coast Athlete and Sculpt Health and Wellness.

Reynolds said he’s been lucky to share the stage with some of the region’s top speakers over the past few years and he has been involved in some pretty powerful events with a series of motivational talks.

It’s a message he wants to bring home to Cumberland County through a personal development seminar at the Susan Taylor Theatre at ARHS on Friday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Be Better: Setting Your Life GPS For Success will feature motivation, inspiration, positivity and possibility.

“It’s a personal development seminar that should be attractive to business people, people in the community, athletes and people looking for a little motivation in their lives,” said Reynolds, who is a partner in Atlantic Personal Development. “Our aim is to help people aspire to be better versions of themselves.”

It’s designed to help feature people be better in every area of their lives.

Joining Reynolds, president of East Coast Athlete and the Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers’ conditioning coach, will be pro basketball player and professional athlete Patrick Manifold and Jason Capson, CEO of Sculpt Health and Wellness.

The Be Better Seminar will be part of a tour put on by Atlantic Personal Development and will feature motivational and inspirational talks. Reynolds, Patrick Manifold and Capson will talk about their experiences while the Amherst seminar will feature a special guest in the form of a young hockey player who has overcome significant adversity to play the sport he loves.

“Participants will learn a lot of things from different perspectives. My story will be different from Patrick’s, who was a pro basketball player, and his story will be different from mine or Jason’s,” he said. “They will take away some tools that will help them in whatever they do in life. It’s not just geared toward sports, it’s geared toward life.”

Traditionally, he said, events such as this are targeted for the business community. He said the group wanted to do a seminar that would not only be attract to business leaders, or those looking to get ahead in life, but also to young people who are just beginning their own life journey.

“I’ve been to events like this and thought all the things I’m learning here could benefit youth,” he said. “We’re teaching basic life skills, like how to be more determined, how to be more resilient, how to overcome adversity, how to be a harder worker. It’s also something that’s geared toward teams and those working in a team atmosphere.”

He said a lot of athletes will begin to focus on physical training earlier in life, but in many cases not much is done with the mental side of sports. To him, the mindset is key.

Seminars such as this are popular in the larger centers, Reynold said. He and his partners plan to tour the region and are also considering retreats where a group of people go away and do what will be done at Be Better, but on a bigger scale.

“When you’re talking about work ethic, attitude and self-discipline that translates into being a better hockey player, that translates into being a better husband, a better employee, a better human being,” he said.

Among those who will be participating are members of the Cumberland County Bantam AA Ramblers hockey club. The program has sponsorship and support from Emmerson Packaging in Amherst.

Sculpt Health and Wellness has been working with employees there for close to two years and its staff has lost approximately 1,000 pounds – resulting in less sick days and a healthier staff. Reynolds said Emmerson Packaging has seen the physical benefits of the program and it’s now interested in working on the mental side of things.

“Emmerson Packaging has become a leader in making staff health a priority and we’re pleased to have them on board as a sponsor of Be Better,” Reynolds said.

The cost $20 per person.
