AMHERST, N.S. — It was a busy Saturday for emergency personnel in Amherst following a pair of motor vehicle collisions.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. Saturday members of the Amherst Police Department, Amherst Fire and EHS responded to a single vehicle accident on Robert Angus Drive.
A vehicle travelling east lost control, crossed traffic and struck a power pole in front of one of the car dealerships. The pole came crashing down on top the car causing extensive damage and starting a small fire.
The driver of the vehicle was treated for minor injuries and later released.
This area of town was without power for several hours.
Nova Scotia Power, Heritage Gas and Amherst Public Works all attended to assist with the cleanup.
The matter is still under investigation.
Earlier, at approximately 1:30 p.m., members of the Amherst Police Department, Amherst Fire Department and EHS responded to a three-vehicle accident on South Albion Street.
A vehicle traveling north on South Albion Street struck the curb before crossing the street and striking a Jeep causing it to spin out of control. The first vehicle continued before striking a local taxi van, causing both vehicles to crash into a large metal sign.
Members of the fire department were able to extract the female driver of the Jeep from her vehicle by utilizing the jaws of life. She suffered minor injuries and was transported to Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre by EHS.
The driver of the first vehicle was noted as showing signs of impairment. He was given a roadside breath demand and was later arrested for impaired driving and dangerous driving charges. He will be appearing in court in late June to face the charges.
The accused also had his parole revoked due to the incident and was transported back to Springhill Penitentiary.
