Access Labels in East Amherst is growing after acquiring the pressure sensitive label manufacturing division of Farnell Packaging of Dartmouth. The move is expected to create several jobs in Amherst while those affected in Dartmouth will be absorbed into other divisions of Farnell Packaging.

Access Labels in East Amherst announced Tuesday that it has purchased the pressure sensitive label manufacturing division of Farnell Packaging of Dartmouth. The acquisition, that has been in the making for six months, allows both companies to continue to grow and focus on their core business.

There will be no job losses at the Dartmouth firm as the affected employees will be absorbed into other divisions of Farnell Packaging.

Several jobs will be added over several months at Access Labels, which got its start in 1993 with Paul Carr and one other employee and now has approximately 30 employees.

It’s the latest expansion for the company that added several jobs in 2012 and also added jobs in 2008 when it added 4,200 square feet.

“This acquisition gives us a bigger footprint within the Atlantic provinces,” Access Labels general sales manager Robert Sams told the Amherst News. “We will be transferring the volume from our facility in Dartmouth to our facility in Amherst and right now we’re making room to add the machine we’re going to add.”

Sams said there will be new jobs, but stressed it’s too early to determine how many or when they will be added. The acquisition will increase the capacity of the Amherst operation by 20 to 30 per cent.

The transition is expected to be complete by the end of October.

“We do not expect any interruption in service for any customers as we increase the capacity of our Amherst facility in order to provide all customers with the excellent service that they have come to know and look forward to,” Sams added. “We are excited to move forward with delivering top quality service and products to even more clients.”

Bill Morash, CFO of Farnell Packaging, said consolidating its label business with Access Labels makes sense.

“In choosing to partner with Access Labels for this transition, we believe that we are consolidating our label business with the most reputable and responsive competitor in the region,” Morash said in a news release. “We have every confidence that Access Labels will do their very best to professionally service and supply all pressure sensitive label needs in the months and years ahead.”

Access Labels specializes in printing labels as well as selling and servicing equipment including label dispensers, applicators and thermal printers.

Sams said this acquisition will make the company the region’s largest label maker.
