There has been a lot of uproar over the Government of Canada’s new stipulation wherein
any organization seeking funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program must attest to their
support of the current government’s stance on reproductive rights. The questions of freedom of
speech and expression have been raised and debated and they are legitimate.
My personal concern goes beyond my right as a Canadian to freely express myself to the
root cause of what is going on in all of this. That is abortion. Growing up in the 1980s I can recall
the uproar surrounding Dr. Morgentaler and the issue of the ethics and legalities of abortion. To
me, the question goes to how we define what makes a human. Biologically speaking at the moment
of conception, a fetus is a full-fledged human, all the parts and pieces are there and it just requires
time to grow. Science also tells us that each preborn child is unique, it contains DNA that is not
found in any other human being ever. We also know that preborn children are living; that is they
are growing, developing, responding to stimuli and undergoing metabolism. Beyond all, the
scientific law of biogenesis which states that all living things reproduce of their same kind tells us
that these preborn children are humans.
The law of Canada tells us something different though. In 1997 the Supreme Court of
Canada ruled that preborn children are not considered persons and therefore not subject to human
rights. Governments and laws have a history of trying to dictate what is considered a person. From
Courts in the United States deeming African Americans to not be persons, to courts in Canada (and
many other places) deeming women to not be persons, to the Nazis using their laws to deem Jewish
people to not be persons and therefore not subject to human rights; there is legacy of governments
using laws to justify evil in spite of scientific and natural truth.
So, I stand against abortion. There are over 100,000 babies killed through abortion every
year in Canada; over 42 million around the world. Canada is one of the very few nations where
babies can be aborted right up to the full term of pregnancy. Jesus said; “Truly, I say to you, as you
did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me”. - I cannot think of anyone in
Canada who is determined to be the ‘least of these’ any more than preborn children.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said; “In the end, we will remember not the words of our
enemies but the silence of our friends.”
