BERWICK, N.S. — The Berwick & District Lions Club was under pressure to find an act for the club’s annual Canada Day long weekend benefit concert, and they’ve lined up an act that’s sure to rock you.

Fancy a little “Radio Gaga?” Have a hankering to hear “Another One Bites the Dust?”

Montreal-based Queen cover band ‘Queen Flash’ will headline this year’s concert, doubling as a tribute to Freddie Mercury and his bandmates.

“It’s an appropriate time for this show given the recent success of the Oscar-winning movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’’ said Mark Hansford of the Berwick & District Lions Club.

“It was an easy choice to make and I am just so pleased the band agreed to come and play for us during the Canada Day weekend. We are building a reputation for showcasing high quality Canadian acts, and this year is absolutely no exception.”

In addition to the concert, the Town of Berwick will be holding several other events on the day in hopes of drawing more people to the festival.

“Berwick will be hosting a ‘Royal’ themed Canada Day weekend of events culminating in the Queen concert,” said Community Development Director Debbie Elliott.

“There will be a dedication of our new building in Rainforth Park, a window display competition for shops and businesses in the town, a firework display and music in town on Saturday evening. Still in the planning stages, we are hoping to present a family tea party and garden party and a movie in the park.”

Hansford has taken on organizing the event and has gone the extra mile to make the tickets as available as possible.

Tickets can be purchased online with most major credit cards at WWW.TICKETOR.COM/BERWICKLIONS. Seats can be selected online beforehand.

Tickets can also be purchased via e-transfer, through any Berwick Lions Club member, or at several retail outlets such as the Berwick Town Hall, all branches of Fraser’s Pro Home Center, Staples in New Minas, and in Berwick at Hello Handmade & Wilson’s Pharmasave.

As always, all proceeds go towards causes supported by the Lions Club.

Hansford says this year “part of the proceeds from the show will help fund an innovative meal program being launched by Berwick & District School.

The school is providing a ‘pay-what-you-can’ policy allowing any pupil to receive a nutritional and balanced lunch regardless of the parent’s ability to pay.” T

The concerts have raised more than $25,000 over the three years.

Tickets are $35, and there is a limited number of VIP passes available. Passes are $60 and will include tickets for the show, preferred seating, a pre-show meal, a free alcoholic beverage (served in the Berwick Curling Club facility), a souvenir T-Shirt, souvenir poster, and the opportunity to meet with the band after the show.

If you go

This year the show will take place on June 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Berwick’s Kings Mutual Century Centre. Tickets are $35.
