As harvest season commences there will be no shortage of fantastic food-focused events happening around the province. Here are five fun events — all occurring before the end of September — for you to check out!
1. September 21, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — Avondale Garlic Fest
This is the seventh year for Avondale Sky Winery’s Garlic Fest in celebration of Nova Scotia’s many garlic growers. Cooking demos will feature all things garlic, while artists from across the Maritimes will be exhibiting original artwork. Food and music will be available all day, with a garlic eating contest at 2 p.m. Admission is $2 at the gate. Children ages 13 and under are free.

2. September 22, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — Halifax VegFest
A one day event featuring plant-based food and drinks, presentations, and activities. Celebrating ethical vegan living, VegFest will showcase over 50 local food, clothing, beauty, and lifestyle exhibitors. Craft making and face painting will be happening as well as a raffle draw and prizes. Admission is a suggested $5 donation to support the Halifax VegFest Society, a volunteer-run non profit organization. Vegan-friendly non-perishable food donations in support of local food banks will also encouraged.

3. September 26, 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m. — Downtown Dartmouth Food Crawl
Bring some cash, grab a map at a participating retailer, and take a self-guided tour through downtown Dartmouth during this early evening event. Local eateries will feature smaller food items generally ranging between $3 and $5, and some will also feature pop-up food vendors. Payment varies by retailer, however, it’s recommended to bring cash to keep the lines flowing quickly.

4. Saturday September 28, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. — Meet Your Farmer At Fisherman’s Cove
The Meet Your Farmer event at Fisherman’s Cove will highlight fresh food producers in the surrounding community, beginning with a free breakfast between 8am and 10am. In addition to the effort to promote buying local food, the day will also include vendors and cooking demos, plus a bouncy castle, craft corner, and petting zoo for children.

5. September 28-29, 8:30am-6pm — Apple Cider Days
Wile’s Lake Farm Market is a family-run business that began as a produce market selling fruits and vegetables from their own farm. Over time the market has evolved and now carries produce from neighbouring farms in Lunenburg County and the Annapolis Valley, and also has a popular bakery, greenhouse business, and gift shop. Over the weekend of September 28 and 29, the market will be celebrating all things apple and apple cider, including a cider pressing demonstrations between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
