As we enter a new month, the Amherst Recreation Department is welcoming the month of February with enthusiasm, as it will soon be time for the Fourth Annual Amherst Winter Carnival.
Starting Tuesday, Feb. 13 and ending Monday, Feb. 19 this year’s winter carnival will be our biggest and best one yet and will feature something for everyone.
The festival’s daily schedule is loaded with activities to keep you physically active. In support of our goal to become the most active, healthy community in Nova Scotia, we have compiled a wide range of activities for everyone.
We will kick things off on the 13th with an Indoor Walking Challenge. This challenge will take place at the Amherst stadium and walkers are asked to document there number of laps on the sheets provided on the upper level. If you don’t feel like walking then take advantage of our many public skates. Full schedule available at Amherst.ca.
The YMCA is offering a number of activities which include POUND class, pickle ball, Aquafit class, youth Friday night fun, PiYo class, WiBit Inflatable Swim, Bouncy Castle Fun and much more. These activities are free for the week as part of the Winter Carnival activity Schedule.
The highlight of the Winter Carnival will be the Outdoor Play Day on Sunday, Feb. 18. The focal point for this day will be in the down town area.
Outdoor play day will take place from 1to 3 p.m. at Victoria Square, Street hockey with the Ramblers will be on Electric Street from 2 to 4 p.m., Horse and Wagons Rides will take place by the Outdoor Skating surface from 2 to 4 p.m., the Outdoor Skating Surface will be also be open. There will be a Doggie Social at the Dog Park (Robb Complex) from 1 to 3 p.m. Head on down with your furry pets and have some fun.
Make this Valentine’s mesmerizing! The Ed Ratelle, Mast Hypnotist, comedy show will take place on Valentine’s Day at 8 p.m.

Did you know that not only does February feature our best Winter Carnival to date, but more importantly, that we celebrate the commemoration of the inauguration of the Flag of Canada annually on Feb. 15?
In 1965, the maple leaf flag we fly so proudly today, replaced the Canadian Red Ensign. A Flag Day Ceremony will take place at the Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb.15.
