As we end the first month of 2018, the Amherst Recreation Department is welcoming the month of February with enthusiasm, as it will soon be time for the Fourth Annual Amherst Winter Carnival. Starting Tuesday, Feb. 13 to Monday, Feb. 19 this year’s winter carnival will be our biggest and best one yet and will feature something for everyone.
You may have noticed that the winter decorative lighting at Victoria Square has not been illuminated over the past week. We have chosen to turn the lighting display off for the next couple weeks but they will be back on once more for the week of winter carnival to help brighten the heart of downtown. We hope you have enjoyed the new winter decorative lighting display throughout the downtown over the past few months and hope you are also looking forward to seeing what other improvements 2018 has in store for Amherst.
In keeping up with our quest to make Amherst the healthiest, most active community in Nova Scotia, we are welcoming those interested to a free ‘Come Try Ringette’ session with Ringette Nova Scotia on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 4 to 5:15 p.m. at the Amherst Stadium. While sticks and rings will be provided, a CSA approved helmet, gloves, and skates are needed to participate. Come get active and try this fast-paced ice sport and see what makes ringette a true team sport. Please check out events such as this one and also our February Skating Schedule on our Amherst Recreation Facebook page or at Amherst.ca.

Did you know that not only does February feature our best Winter Carnival to date, but more importantly, that we celebrate the commemoration of the inauguration of the Flag of Canada annually on Feb. 15th? In 1965, the maple leaf flag we fly so proudly today, replaced the Canadian Red Ensign. A Flag Day Ceremony will take place at the Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15.
