Hello from beautiful downtown New Salem.
On Friday, Feb. 2 Spencer's Island Bingo will be held at the Advocate Fire Hall at 7 p.m. Come on out for an evening of fun.
On Saturday, Feb. 3 there will be a Paint Night at the Advocate Fire Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. This is a great evening of fun and you don't have to know how to paint. The proceeds are for the Advocate District Voluntary Fire Department.
On Sunday, Feb. 4 a special meeting about the Advocate dike will be held at the Advocate Fire Hall at 2 p.m. by the experts that are doing a study about it. It’s no exaggeration to say that the future of Advocate is going to be on the line as the new dike study moves ahead this spring. The existing dike is in urgent need of immediate repair and general strengthening. But the study, which is due to be completed in March, will also be looking longer term to gauge the effect of rising sea levels and storm surges.
Specifically, the big question is whether that means governments should decide to plan for some far-off day in the future when the community might permanently flood out.
If we are not very careful that decision will happen - and Advocate will be pretty well written off because we will be cast into a limbo of long-term uncertainty. What we require is an urgent fix for the dike, which will strengthen and raise it to withstand expected sea levels and storm surges over the next 10-20 years. They will be here with Mike Johnson, regional emergency management coordinator, to get our views on what we think should be done. So it is very important that we show up to tell them.
On Saturday, Feb. 10 open mic will be at the Advocate Fire Hall beginning at 7 p.m. Bring your voice, instrument, a joke or story for an evening of music and fun. There will be a 50/50 draw and canteen. If you wish to be part of a house band please let them know when you get there.
That's it for this week. Have a great week, everyone, and enjoy your family and friends.
