We hope you all have enjoyed a very Merry Christmas and would like to extend our warmest wishes to you all for a very happy and healthy 2019. Santa has now come and gone, and a new year will soon be upon us, there is no time like the present to begin planning for a happy and healthy year in 2019. As part of our goal to be the most healthy, active community in Nova Scotia, we here at the Town of Amherst are happy to provide you with many resources to help get you outside and help you to stay active during the winter months. We also hope to continue to brighten your nights and increase evening winter activities as we continue to illuminate Victoria Square and the downtown outdoor skating surface with our beautiful winter decorative lighting for all to enjoy.

Enjoy winter in Amherst

Are you feeling stuffed from all the turkey dinners with all the fixings? Why not bundle up, get some fresh air and take advantage of the many great opportunities available to you throughout town such as a stroll along the Big Block Walk downtown, or go out and enjoy a skate on ‘A’ Place to Play outdoor skating surface which is open daily, weather permitting on the corner of Victoria Street and Maple Avenue.

Also, did you know that the Four Fathers Library, YMCA, and the stadium recreation office offer snowshoes FREE of charge for daily and weekend sign outs?

Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the outdoors on top of the snow throughout our many parks and along our walking trails.

Don’t forget to include your four-legged friends in your winter activities as well, take them for some fun and free roaming time at our dog park located at Dickey Park at 132 E Pleasant St.

If you are looking to get out of the cold and away from the snow and ice, the indoor walking track at the Amherst Stadium is open daily, with the exception of the short holiday break. For more information what’s happening at the Amherst Stadium and when, please visit the Stadium Calendar on the Town of Amherst website under the Recreation Department tab or follow us on Facebook through the Amherst Recreation Department page.

The Family First New Year’s Eve Celebration will take place on Dec. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be lots of fun and exciting activities for everyone to enjoy! The very talented, local band Second Toe will have you tapping your toes. Come get your exercise by participating in our walking challenge on the walking track or by going for a skate on the ice. There will be face painting, magic, and more as well as wagon rides outside and a grand finale of fireworks for New Years that will be shot off the roof of the stadium. We hope to see you there!

The Amherst Recreation Department would like to extend our warmest of wishes for a very Happy New Year and all the best for 2019. We hope you will continue to join us at events, in our parks, on the walking trails, and at our recreational facilities and help us continue in our quest of becoming the most healthy, active community in Nova Scotia.
