SPRINGHILL, N.S. – A Springhill company is receiving a business development incentive in the former of an innovation rebate from Nova Scotia Business Inc.

By proceeding with a $4.8-million capital investment in automation and formation equipment, Surrette Battery will increase its capacity and take on more business in international markets.

"We've seen a steady and substantial increase in demand for our deep cycle batteries, specifically for our renewable energy, railroad and motive power and industrial product lines," Surrette Battery marketing manager Jeff Myles told the Amherst News on Wednesday. “We've been fortunate to experience year-over-year growth, driven primarily by a push for deep cycle batteries in renewable energy markets; many of which are in developing countries. Our product lines are currently warehoused in over 20 countries. Last year, direct shipments from Nova Scotia reached 35-plus countries."

Surrette Battery has been manufacturing deep cycle batteries in Springhill since 1959. Myles said the Rolls brand has continued to maintain a solid reputation and is well-known in the industry, offering high-quality craftsmanship and dependability.

He said the number of employees at its Springhill manufacturing facility has also seen steady growth, going from approximately 50 to 90 employees and staff.

"This project will facilitate continued improvements in operations, efficiency as well as increased production necessary to meet demand as we expand our distribution network worldwide," Myles said.

Nova Scotia Business Inc. said the company is eligible to earn a maximum innovation rebate of $1,200,247 upon completion of its project.

To be considered for an innovation rebate, a company's total project costs must be between $2 million and $15 million.

An approved rebate is up to 25 per cent against eligible project costs.
