COXHEATH, N.S. — Zutphen Resources has registered its Gillis Lake quarry expansion project for environmental assessment with the provincial government.

The proposed undertaking will expand the existing Gillis Lake quarry from four to 9.3 hectares. The quarry is located at 2918 Coxheath Road, where Zutphen manufactures aggregate — a material formed from a loosely compacted mass of fragments or particles — for its own use and to supply other contractors.

Zutphen purchased the quarry from Malcolm S. MacDonald Company in 2013 and has been continuing quarry activities since that time.

Expansion of the quarry is required to access desirable aggregate in the future, according to the environmental assessment registration document.

There are no anticipated changes to the current operations within the quarry, including the amount and frequency of blasting, quarry hours of operation, and number and frequency of haul trucks collecting aggregate from the site.

The expansion project is registered for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act. It will commence upon project approval.

Public comments on the registration document will be accepted until Feb. 8 and the minister of environment will decide if the project can be granted conditional environmental assessment approval on or before Feb. 28.

Comments can be submitted online through the provincial website and by mail to: Environmental Assessment Branch Nova Scotia Environment, P.O. Box 442 Halifax, NS, B3J 2P8.

The department can also be reached by email at [email protected] or by phoning (902) 424-3600.

All comments received from the public consultation will be posted on the department’s website for public viewing (after the minister of Environment has made a decision on the environmental assessment).

Copies of the Environmental Assessment Registration Document may be examined at the East Bay Post Office, 3549 East Bay Highway, Sydney Forks Recreation Centre, 2639 King’s Road, Nova Scotia Environment, Sydney Office, 1030 Upper Prince St., Suite 2, Sydney, and online at http://www.novascotia.ca/nse/ea.
