ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A second deck at the Quidi Vidi Brewery will get another test at St. John’s city council on Monday night.
The brewery is looking to add a second deck off the existing taproom. The deck will be built on the harbour side of the property and carry the same hours as the taproom itself, closing at 9:00 p.m. on weeknights and 11:00 p.m on weekends. The application notes no speakers will be installed on the proposed deck.
A public meeting was held to discuss the application on November 20, facilitated by Glenn Barnes. Quidi Vidi Brewery's Justin Fong attended on behalf of the brewery, with councilors Hope Jamieson and Sandy Hickman on behalf of the city.
Residents in the area raised concerns over the potential for increased traffic and noise in the area related to the increased parking being asked for by proponents of the expansion.
In the meeting, Fong noted the brewery had recently rented warehouse space in Donovans, which helps reduce the amount of distribution trips needed, which helps alleviate traffic concerns in the area.
Residents at the meeting noted concerns over noise in the area, particularly late at night. The minutes note concerns over patrons overstaying in the area after closing time, causing concerns over noise and safety of those close by.
Gerard Doran, a development supervisor with the city, noted city staff are currently reviewing the level of disturbance in the area caused by the brewery, along with reviewing the amount of parking.
The initial proposal for the development contained a large accessory building as part of the development, which has since been removed from the application. The meeting minutes note residents were in favour of the building being removed.
The meeting minutes note that the majority of speakers spoke favourably of the brewery itself, but are concerned about parking, noise, and traffic in the Quidi Vidi area, generally.
City staff are recommending the patio be allowed, and to allow for 16 more parking spaces to be added in the area.
Council will vote on the recommendations at the Monday evening council meeting, where the development is first on the agenda.
