AMHERST, N.S. – A Quebec-based retailer is making its first foray into Nova Scotia with a store in the Amherst Town Square Mall.
Hart Stores Inc. is expected to move into the space formerly occupied by Rossy and later Liquidation World in the middle of the mall. It’s not known when the store will open, but it’s expected to take place sometime in either March or April.

As many as 10 to 15 people could be employed.

“We will have around 25,000 square feet and it will be a full retail store like all other Hart Stores,” company official Fady Haddad told the Amherst News. “This is an area where we see enormous potential so that’s why we’re opening there.

Haddad said the Amherst store is one of approximately 10 new stores the company is opening in the coming months. One of the other new stores is in Saint John, N.B.

There are other stores already in Fredericton, Woodstock, Tracadie-Sheila, Campbellton, Beresford and Caraquet, N.B.

Hart Stores is a mid-sized value-driven department store that was founded in Rosemere, Que. in 1960 by Harry Hart. In 2015, Paul Nassar took over the company that includes 80 Hart stores and 20 Mainson en Gros stores.

The stores offer a variety of fashion and basic apparel lines plus a broad selection of home furnishing, housewares, gift wares, toys, bed and bath, electronics and furniture.

Since 2017, it has offered online shopping.

Stores are based in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick, primarily in smaller and suburban markets.
