AMHERST – Gordon Food Service is expanding its presence in Amherst.

The company, located in the Amherst and Area Industrial Park, announced early Friday that it’s adding 45,000 square-feet of warehouse space including refrigerated and frozen storage.

The expansion is expected to be completed next winter.

“For the past few years, our business in this region has grown significantly,” Gordon Food Service president Dean Noble said in a news release. “We’re excited to see that result in new investment and future growth. With this facility expansion, we have the opportunity to continue to extend our distribution footprint and expand our product offering.”

It’s unknown if the expansion will result in additional jobs at the Amherst facility.

Gordon Food Service established its Atlantic distribution centre in Amherst in 2003 to service customers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. At the time, the company said it chose Amherst because of its central location in the Maritimes and its access to the Trans Canada Highway.

“The Amherst community has been a great partner in our success in the region,” Gordon Food Service Atlantic Division president Cam Godin said. “Gordon Food Service is very pleased to locate our operations for the Atlantic region in Amherst, an ideal location for distribution business in Canada. We are proud to have a high-performance team of very talented people and look forward to many years of growing and sustaining our business and the local community.”

Amherst Mayor Dr. David Kogon welcomed the decision to expand in Amherst. The mayor said Gordon Food Services has been a major contributor to the town’s economic for several years.

“Their announcement today of a large-scale expansion to their distribution centre on Industrial Park Drive shows the company continues to have confidence in our community, and that they recognize the town as a good place to live, work and play,” the mayor said.

The expansion is the latest good economic news for Amherst. Work recently began on an expansion to the Atlantic Windows manufacturing facility in Amherst while Weston Foods is expanding its Amherst operation as well.

Plant manager Tyler McLeod said the company is in the midst of a 5,000 square-foot expansion with work expected to be completed by the end of August.

McLeod said the latest expansion to its receiving area is on top of a previous expansion of 5,000 square-feet two years ago.
