ANTIGONISH, N.S. - Veteran athlete Eileen Garvie showed her experience Thursday morning with a clutch performance in bocce during the Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games.

In her backyard, at St. F.X.’s Memorial Field, the Antigonish native edged Nikita Williams of Team Alberta 12-10 in a nail-biting game Aug. 2, which was highlighted by plenty of superb shot-making from both players.

“I was a little nervous, but I knew I would be OK,” the 71-year-old said, between hugs from friends and family, just moments after the win.

Garvie has been here before, having represented Team Nova Scotia – in both the winter and summer games – on many occasions and in several sports.

The soft-spoken champion, who has also competed internationally, has skated, skied, raced and played floor hockey – just to name a few of her athletic endeavors.

She has played bocce for 14 years.

“I am having a lot of fun,” Garvie said of her Games’ experience, so far, before receiving more congratulations.

She had a message for those well-wishers.

“I love you all.”

Friday competition at the Games will include the debut of rhythmic gymnastics, along with continuing action in athletics, bocce, basketball, golf, soccer, softball and swimming.

The Games wrap up Saturday.
