AMHERST – Two local gymnasts travel to the 2018 Atlantic Gymnastics Championships this weekend at Credit Union Place in Summerside, PEI.

Kirsten Lawrence and Emma Sjanic will represent the Aerials Gymnastics Club on Team Nova Scotia.

“I’m excited. I really wanted to go this year.” said Sjanic, a 15-year-old, Grade 9 student at Amherst Regional High School who is taking her first trip to the Atlantic Championships.

This is Kirsten Lawrence’s second trip to the Atlantics, after joining Team Nova Scotia two years ago in St. John’s, Nfld.

“I tried to improve on everything throughout the season, so I’m excited to be going to the Atlantics again,” said the 16-year-old, Grade 10 student at ARHS.

Both athletes have been in gymnastics since they were about five-years-old.

Their longtime coach, Michelle Landry, is proud of her gymnasts.

“They’ve been working hard, so it’s nice to see them achieve their goals,” said Landry. “And it’s always fun to see our gymnasts travel with Team Nova Scotia.”

She expects both girls to do well at the Atlantics.

“Kirsten is a good all-around gymnast and is good in all of the events, and Emma is really strong on vault and has been doing good on beam as well,” said Landry.

Sjanic said she hopes to do well. She plans to keep her legs straight, and says, “I want to make sure I don’t fall.”

Kirsten competes in the Open 7 Division, and Sjanic in the Open 6 Division. Both gymnasts plan to keep competing until the graduate from high school.
