PARRSBORO - They may have been still coming down off their recent provincial hockey win, but it was for soccer that a group of girls were honoured here on April 24. The Parrsboro Warriors girls soccer team was presented with the Barry Wood Memorial Award for their second-place finish in soccer provincials last fall, receiving certificates and having their team's name placed on the plaque that hangs in council chambers. Coaches Samantha McCrindle and Charlene Smith presented the certificates while Mayor Lois Smith presented the plaque. Among those in the audience was Owen Wood, father of Barry Wood, a promising young Parrsboro boxer who passed away as a result of a car accident in 1989. "This is a very, very special award, and it's only given out to special athletes, and you guys made the bill," said the mayor. "We all have Barry in our hearts, and consider this a very special award you are receiving." The soccer team won the silver medal in New Waterford on Nov. 5, 2011, in what was the first-ever appearance at provincials for a Parrsboro female soccer team. The Barry Wood Memorial Award is given to Parrsboro-area teams or individual athletes who achieve first or second place in a sport at either the provincial or national level. It has not been presented since 2001, when the school's boys' soccer team won the provincial banner. "We want to thank (you) for the special recognition happening tonight," said coach Charlene Smith. "We really appreciate and understand the importance of this award." On hand to receive their certificates were Khristine Bowden, Karlee Cormier, Madison Currie, Keira Fullerton, Destiny Hoeg, Shelby Leopold, Kim MacMillan, Victoria McCrindle, Emily Mills, Brianna Smith, Brooke Walton, Kirsten Willigar and Ava Winters. Missing from the presentation were Sarah Boudreau-LeBlanc, Jessica Johnson, Phoenix Bard Cavers, Mickayla Sears, Ronja Bankowicz, Jasmen White and Sarah Colpitts.
