CALGARY (CP) A chuckwagon driver was seriously injured and two horses were killed Saturday in a horrific crash at the Calgary Stampede.

Two rigs collided on the first turn of a Rangeland Derby heat, sending horses tumbling under wagons and sending Tyler Helmig, 45, flying onto the track.

Stampede officials said the other driver involved, Gary Gorst, was not injured but two of his horses were killed.

As a result of the accident, two horses died, said Doug Fraser of the Calgary Stampede. One died as a result of the accident; the other was humanely euthanized.

EMS Supt. Mike Plato said Helmig suffered a hip injury and a possible broken arm. He was taken to Foothills hospital in serious but stable condition.

Outrider Chanse Vigen, who jumped into Helmigs runaway wagon, said he barely had time to react to the accident that was unfolding right in front of him.

I looked up and watched him skipping across the track like a stone skips on water, Vigen said.

Helmig, the 2002 WPCA world champion, was conscious when he left the track.
