SAINT JOHN, N.B. - An elderly New Brunswick man has died in prison while serving a two-year sentence for impaired driving causing death.
Joseph Chamberlain, 79, of Rothesay died of natural causes at Dorchester Penitentiary early Sunday.
Chamberlain was sentenced in December after admitting he was drunk when he ran over a woman in the parking lot of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Rothesay last summer.
At the time of Chamberlain's sentencing, his lawyer called a prison term ''cruel and unusual punishment'' given the bad health of his client.
The lawyer feared a prison term would be a life sentence for Chamberlain, who suffered from pulmonary disease and relied on a wheelchair for mobility and an oxygen tank to breathe.
