AMHERST – 15-year-old Emma Sjanic (left) and 16-year-old Kirsten Lawrence had success competing against the best in Atlantic Canada in Summerside, PEI.
“It was really fun traveling with the team and making new friends,” said Sjanic.
The two athletes competed April 20 and 21 at Credit Union Place in Summerside.
Sjanic competed with Team Nova Scotia in the Open 6 Division.
Her team finished first in Atlantic Canada, winning gold, and she finished fourth on bars, fifth on vault and eighth overall.
Lawrence also had a good time in Summerside competing with Team Nova Scotia in the Open 7 Division
“Skill-wise I achieved everything that I wanted, and it was fun overall,” said Lawrence. “I made a lot of new friends and good memories.”
She finished fourth on beam and ninth on vault.
Their coach at the Aerials Gymnastics Club in Amherst, Michelle Landry, said the girls did great at the Atlantics.
“I’m really proud of how they did,” said Landry. “They were good team players and it was, all-in-all, a really great experience.”
Both athletes will move up to a higher division next year, and both hope to return to the Atlantic championships.
“I’d like to make Atlantics again,” said Sjanic. “I’ll have to learn how to do a fly-away dismount on the bars. It’s a new skill I’ll have to learn.”
Lawrence will compete in Level 8 next season.
“Since I’ll be trying Level 8, I’ll be looking forward to trying new skills.”
Landry has high hopes for them in 2019.
“I’d like to see them take the next step and maybe make it to the Eastern Canadian Championships,” said Landry.
