SPRINGHILL – The Cumberland County Blues earned one point after they forced overtime against the Bulldogs Sunday night in Springhill.
The Blues led 1-0 for much of the game after Alex Griffiths scored with 9:27 left in the second period off passes from Rueben MacKenzie and Cole Jacquard.
The Bulldogs tied the Blues 1-1 with 6:04 left in the game, and then scored again at 3:44 into the extra frame, winning 2-1.
Trent Wilkie played in net for the Blues, stopping 51 of 52 shots, while his teammates fired 31 pucks at Bulldogs goaltender Charles Jensen.
The single point was the first point the Blues earned since they beat the Brookfied Elks on Oct. 12.
Blues vs. Penguins
The Blues were on the road Friday night, losing 6-4 to the top team in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League, the East Hants Penguins.
The Penguins scored three goals in the first period, but the Blues battled back, scoring three goals in the second period to tie the game 3-3.
MacKenzie scored two of those goals and Chad Miller one.
Madison Colford and Brody Deegan assisted on MacKenzie’s first goal and Deegan and Kansas Hart assisted on his second goal.
Miller’s goal was unassisted.
The Penguins outscored the Blues 3-1 in the third period; with Colford scoring on the power play off passes from Hart and Mitchell O’Donnell.
Wilkie stopped 39 of 45 shots, and the Blues peppered the Penguins Brent Walters with 19 shots.
Standings
The Blues sit at the bottom of the Sid Rowe Division with three points. The Glace Bay Junior Miners are atop the division with 33 points, the Pictou County Scotians are second with 30 points, the Bulldogs third with 18 points, and the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates have 17 points.
Upcoming Games
The Blues have three games before the Christmas break.
They return home Friday to host the Pirates, and on Saturday they travel to Cole Harbour to play the Colts.
On Dec. 15, the Blues are at home to the Scotians at 7:30 p.m.
