AMHERST – The second edition of the Corey Bates-Nick Merrill Friendship Hockey Tournament takes place at three Cumberland County arenas this weekend in memory of a pair of hockey and baseball players who lost their lives in a tragic car accident near Amherst in August 2007.
Twenty-nine teams from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island will take to the ice to compete in five divisions from novice C, which will operate in a jamboree format, to midget C.
The tournament is being hosted by the Cumberland County Minor Hockey Association.
In Novice C, three Cumberland County teams will be joined by the Dartmouth Whalers in the jamboree that will see the four teams play exhibition games with no winners declared and no tournament champion.
Atom C will feature two divisions of four teams with the Cumberland Rams, Cumberland Bobcats, Truro Green Bearcats and the Dartmouth Whalers in one division and the Cumberland Golden Knights, Truro Black Bearcats, West Colchester Cobras and New Glasgow Bombers in the other.
The Cumberland Rams, Sackville Rangers, Stellarton Royals and Trenton Steelers make up one of two divisions in peewee C with the other division including the Cumberland Bombers, Moncton Hawks, Dieppe Eagles and New Glasgow Bombers.
Bantam C will feature four teams including the Cumberland Ramblers, Sherwood-Parkdale Falcons, Oromocto Kings and Tatamagouche Titans with midget C featuring two Cumberland County teams, the Riverview Blues, Sydney Steelers and the Thorburn Golden Hawks.
