TRURO – Amherst’s Jacob Melanson has surpassed a major milestone with the Truro Major Bantam Bearcats.
The 14-year-old recently became the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Bearcats’ franchise, surpassing Gavis Hart’s 82 points.
Melanson has 32 goals and 30 assists for 62 points this season with the Bearcats and with still several games to go in the season has 87 points in two years with the team.
The forward has one more career goal than Hart, who finished with 50 in his two seasons, while he’s second in overall assists to Owen Mullen’s 38 – another record he will probably break before the season is over.
Another rather dubious distinction has him second overall in franchise history for penalty minutes with 110 combined minutes in two seasons – just seven back of Riley MacInnis.
Melanson and fellow Amherst resident, defenceman Matthew Hunter, recently represented the Bearcats at the league all-star game.
It has been a good season for Melanson, who was a member of the Nova Scotia gold medal-winning squad at the Under-15 Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton back in October.
