Amherst A’s Girls win Division 5 provincial title

CAMBRIDGE – The Amherst A’s Mini-Girls basketball team won the 2018 Basketball Nova Scotia, Under-12, Division 5 provincial championship title last weekend at Central Kings High School in Cambridge.

The girls won the title with a 36-18 win over the Central Kings Gators in the championship game.

“That was definitely Amherst’s best game of the weekend,” said coach Fred Gould.

Kristen Dupuis, Brooklyn Nicholson and Mataya Sangster scored six points each in the championship matchup, with Hailey Johnson, Megan Teed, and Cassidy Sangster scoring four each.

Avery Bryan, Katherine McEachern, and Maddison Landry added two points each in the championship game.

Tournament all-star accolades went to Kristen Dupuis and tournament MVP went to Megan Teed.

The A’s won all three of their games on the road to the final.

They kicked the provincials off with a 33-27 win over, once again, the Gators.

Dupuis scored eight, McEachern six, Teed and Mataya Sangster four each, Sykora Hussey scored three, and Bryan, Johnson, Landry and Cassidy Sangster scored two each.

Saturday started with a dominant 47-18 win over the Yarmouth Comets.

Teed and Dupuis scored eight each, Mataya Sangster, Bryan and Johnson scored six each, Cassidy Sangster had four points, Landry three, and McEachern, Hussey and Nicholson scored two each.

Sunday’s crossover game saw the A's beat Fall river 60-10,

Teed and Nicholson led the way with 12 each, Johnson and Dupuis had eight, Mataya Sangster and Bryan had six each, McEachern four, Cassidy Sangster three, and Landry had one point.
