Second miracle comeback falls three runs short

The Amherst Athletics earned the silver medal at the Baseball Nova Scotia Bantam A championships in Eastern Passage on Sunday. EASTERN PASSAGE – The Amherst Athletics almost pulled off a second consecutive miracle comeback, but fell just short losing the Baseball Nova Scotia Bantam A championship game 13-10 to the Cole Harbour Cardinals.

Trailing 10-2 in the fourth inning, the Athletics bats came alive and pulled to within three of the Cardinals going into the final inning before running out of gas.
Julian MacDonald hit a double and a pair of singles in the game for Amherst while Zach Boudreau, Matthew Hunter, Kyle McCarthy, Nick Baigent, Cameron Baigent and Isaac VanSnick each hit singles.
Julian MacDonald and Ty Beed pitched in the championship game for the Athletics.
Earlier Sunday, the Athletics were down 9-1 going into the fifth inning when they rallied in fifth and sixth inning to defeat the Strait Area Sting 15-12 in the semifinal.
Jayden Matheson started for the Athletics with Madden Miller coming into the game in the fourth and holding the Sting scoreless in his final two innings of work.
Cameron Baigent and Jayden Matheson each had three hits for Amherst while Zach Boudreau, Matthew Hunter, Kyle McCarthy, Ryan Rideout and Ty Beed each had two singles. Nick Baigent and Reece MacDonald each had one single.
Amherst opened with a 12-11 loss to the Strait Sting on Friday night in a game in which the Athletics battled back from a 9-4 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Strait scored three times in the top of the seventh and the Athletics scored two in the bottom of the inning before stranding the tying run on second base.
Jayden Matheson had three hits for Amherst in the game while Kyle McCarthy, Ty Beed, Matthew Hunter and Zach Boudreau had two singles each. Julian MacDonald had one single.
Julian MacDonald, Nick Baigent and Madden Miller all pitched for Amherst.
In their second game, Amherst’s offence exploded in a 15-0 win over the host Eastern Passage Pirates.
Ryan Rideout hit a triple and a single in the win with Julian MacDonald and Kyle McCarthy each hitting three singles. Madden Miller and Matthew Hunter each hit two singles, Zach Boudreau doubled and Ty Beed and Isaac VanSnick each singled.
Jayden Matheson and Isaac VanSnick pitched for Amherst in the win.
Needing a win to get into the semifinals, the Athletics defeated Cole Harbour 5-3 on Saturday.
Matthew Hunter carried a perfect game into the fourth inning before giving up a two-out single. Zach Boudreau and Madden Miller also pitched for Amherst.
Kyle McCarthy doubled and hit a pair of singles for Amherst in the game while Matthew Hunter and Nick Baigent each singled twice. Madden Miller, Jayden Matheson, Cameron Baigent and Burke Beed each hit singles.
