AMHERST – Two people die of heart attack and stroke every twenty minutes in Canada.

That grim statistic was imparted to staff at the Atlantic Superstore, including friends and family, before they embarked on a 20-minute Big Bike ride Wednesday afternoon in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

The 24-member cycling team, the Amherst Superstore Selects, raised $1,869 in support of the foundation, which is $369 more than they raised in 2016.

Each team member raised a minimum of $40, and they also hosted a fundraising barbecue Wednesday afternoon at the Superstore.

The Amherst Big Bike ride was the first of the season in Nova Scotia.

The Big Bike will also make stops in Cape Breton, Antigonish, Truro and the Annapolis Valley before finishing up Aug. 17 in Halifax.

The Nova Scotia-wide goal for the 2017 Big Bike ride is to raise $240,000.
