Blues season comes to an end

SPRINGHILL –The Pictou County Scotians put an end to the Cumberland County Blues season Sunday night, beating them 5-3 at the Trenton Arena.

Pictou took a 2-1 lead in the first period, the Blues tied the game 3-3 in the second, and Pictou slammed the door shut on the Blues in the third, winning 5-3.

First Period

Jared Murphy scored the first goal of the game, giving the Blues a 1-0 lead of passes from Dalton Turner and Taylor Smith.

The goal was scored a little over six minutes into the game, but the Scotians went up 2-1 before the end of the first.

Second Period

The Blues tied the game 2-2 less than three minutes into the second period when Madison Colford scored off an assist from Reuben MacKenzie.

Pictou then went up 3-2, but Dalton Turner tied the game 3-3 with assists from Jared Murphy and Matt Smith.

Third Period

Pictou scored two goals, one with 16:22 left in the third, and one with 11:33 left in the third.

Joel Goguen played in net for the Blues, stopping 50 of the 55 shots he faced.

The Blues had 41 shots on Scotians goaltender Blake Meech.

Sid Rowe Division Standings

The Blues finished the regular season with a record of 9-20, along with two overtime wins, giving them 34 points on the season.

The Blues went 2-10 since the Christmas break.

One more win would have put them in the playoffs, bumping the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates out of the playoffs. Each win is worth three points, and the Pirates finished the season with 36 points.

The Scotians finished the regular season with 39 points in the Sid Rowe, the Antigonish Bulldog finished with 42 points, and the NSJHL leading Kameron Jr. Miners finished with 70 points in the Sid Rowe.

Fridays Game Results

The Blues finished their home schedule Friday night in Springhill with a 5-4 win over the Scotians.

Keegan Marcott assisted on four of the Blues five goals, while Matt Smith scored one goal and one assist.

Patrick Byrne scored the game winner with 38 seconds left in the game, and Chad Miller, Madison Colford and Ben Smith added one each for the Blues. Brendan Turner added one assist.

Pierrick Heudes played in net for the Blues. He stopped 44 of 48 shots, and his teammates had 27 shots on Scotians goaltender Brandon MacDonald.
