AMHERST - All Amherst Regional High School track and field athletes who participated in the NSSAF district championships last weekend in Stellarton made it through to the regional championships, which are this weekend in Stellarton.

"This is the first time in a long while the whole team got through, which is pretty impressive," said Shawn McManaman, head coach of the ARHS track and field team. "People really stepped up their level from practice to the competition."

The top eight athletes in each event at districts qualified for the regionals, but at the regionals only the top four, and ones spare, will qualify for provincials, which are next weekend at Sydney Academy at Cape Breton University.

"Districts is a learning experience, and then regionals is top four and is quite tough, so we're expecting half our team to disappear," said McManaman.

He says much will depend on the boys and girls relay teams.

"If we get them through to provincials our numbers will go up, if we don't get the relays through they will go down."

One of the highlights of the regional championship was Desmond Oliver, who is a Special Senior athlete at ARHS.

"When he ran the 100-metres he fell down at the start, then he got up and fell again and lost his glasses. He grabbed his glasses, ran with them in his hand and won the race by more than 20 metres," said McManaman. "Everyone on the track team that had a chance to watch him were down at the fence cheering him on. He's one of those kids that everybody likes."

Oliver also won the long jump by about two metres and the shot put by more than two metres.

Stephen Belyea was at practice Thursday night coaching his teammates in the long jump.

Belyea broke his toe while playing basketball. He did compete in the long jump at the districts with the broken toe, finishing in eighth position. But he will not compete at the regionals.

“I have national championships (in the long jump) in the first weekend in July in St. Tres in Quebec,” said Belyea. “That’s one of the reasons I’m not pushing it right now.”

Belyea will begin studies at Dalhousie University and will compete in the long jump for Dal.

For now he will help his teammates succeed.

"I wish them the best of luck at the regional,” he said.
