ARHS will be the venue for the Maritime Open taekwon-do competition on Saturday.
AMHERST – TaeKwon-do will be in the spotlight this weekend when Amherst hosts the 2014 Maritime Open on Saturday.
Doors open at the ARHS gymnasium at 8:30 a.m. with clubs coming from throughout the Maritimes for the one-day competition.
“This event is held with the intention of sharing all the martial arts as one family, to learn from each other and expose the arts to everyone,” Jim Ripley of JC’s TaeKwon-Do said. “We have held this event since 2004 and has been a great success,
The event is hosted by the Amherst and Area TaeKwon-do Parents Association that was formed in 2004 to raise funds in support of the students of JC's TaeKwon-Do, who compete outside of the province,
Since the Amherst association was formed students from JC’s TaeKwon-Do have been able to compete from St. Johns, N.L. to Richmond, B.C., to Florida, and everywhere in between – even as far away as New Zealand and Spain for the last two ITF World Championships.
The events people will see at the Maritime Open include patterns, sparring (semi-contact) and weapons.
Opening Ceremonies start at 9:30 a.m.
The event will be a warm-up for all the ITF competitors for the 2014 Eastern Canadian TaeKwon-do Championships that are being held in Amherst on June 7 at the Amherst Stadium.
