CHARLOTTETOWN – Two Spartans tested the waters at the recent PEI swim championships and returned home with a dozen place awards and almost as many new personal bests.

“We went with hopes of qualifying for finals and came home with place awards for each event entered,” said Jan Matthews, Spartans coach.

Katelyn MacNeil collected six medals and recorded five personal best times, earning first place in the 50-metre backstroke and the 200-metre individual medley and third in the 50-mtre butterfly, 50-metre breaststroke, 100-metre free and 100-metre backstroke.

Daphne Fawthrop swam all best times as she collected a silver medal in the 50-metre butterfly and bronze medals in the 100-metre and 200-metre IM events.

She also placed fourth in the 100-metre free, fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke and seventh in the 50-metre breaststroke.

“The past few years have been a rebuilding time for the swim club and the renewed version of the Spartans has been building in numbers, confidence and ability,” said Matthews. “While we heard comments about our 'small team', I think the girls made their mark during the weekend."

The Spartans are training towards the Nova Scotia championships in February.
