BEDFORD – The Amherst Pioneer Fuels Red Sox are heading to the Atlantic championships.
The Red Sox scored four times in the third inning to break open a 4-4 game and cruise to a 10-4 win over the Shelburne Reds in Sunday's Baseball Nova Scotia Bantam AA Championships in Bedford.
Brandon Greeno struck out eight and gave up only two hits in just over five innings of work in relief of starter Chris Richards. Greeno only walked one. Richards gave up four runs on four hits and one strike out in an inning of work.
MacKenzie LeBlanc and Blake Thompson each two singles and a triple, Richards hit two singles and a double, Mike O'Brien singled and doubled, Baiden Landry and Caleb Coulson each singled twice and Morgan Jobes, Brad Gray and Dylan Baker each singled.
Amherst advances to the Atlantic championship tournament Sept. 13 to 15 in Cardigan, P.E.I.
It's the first time since 2007 that Amherst has won a Bantam AA provincial banner.
Amherst opened the tournament on Friday with a 9-1 win over Shelburne before dropping a 16-8 loss to Sydney Mines. The Red Sox bounced back with 18-5 win over the host Tri-County Rangers before advancing to the final earlier Sunday with a 16-0 win over New Glasgow.
