AMHERST – Walking on paths, playing croquet and playing washer toss are only a few of the many activities seniors will enjoy during the Rotary Seniors Party.

“The idea is to have fun, draw attention to the park and provide a service to the senior population,” said Morris Haugg, chair of the seniors party subcommittee.

The party is June 8, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Rotary Park on Willow Street, and is free.

“There are many recreation facilities in town but this park is great for seniors,” said Haugg.

The party will promote the activities the park has to offer, especially the seven pieces of exercise equipment in the park, by asking people to earn tickets.

“For instance, you might be asked to do 10 repetitions on one of the exercise machines and get two tickets for the effort, or if you walk around the track twice you might get three tickets,” said Haugg.

People can then take their tickets to a tent that will be set up on site where they can purchase items such as water, pop, juice, a hot dog, or whatever else the tent has to offer.

Haugg said seniors are encouraged to bring their grandkids.

“The kids can earn tickets too,” he said.

The day will also feature musical entertainment, and yoga and gymnastics demonstrations throughout the afternoon.

The Rotary bought the park about ten years ago and they are constantly making improvements to the facility.

“We acquired the park with the idea of making it a recreation facility for seniors, but anybody can come here,” said Haugg.

Future plans include washrooms, and more benches and picnic tables.
