AMHERST - Zach Chatfield's goal in the shootout was the winner as the Cumberland County Amherst Pharmasave Ramblers defeated the Antigonish Bulldog 2-1 to capture the Peewee AA division at the 47th Annual Carter's Sports Cresting Bluenose Minor Hockey Tournament on Sunday.
"We are very proud of these kids," said Mike Fullerton, Peewee AA Ramblers head coach. "They played excellent. They did everything we showed them in practice, and now they rewarded us by winning the Bluenose here in Amherst."
Peter Bekkers scored in the first period to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead that would stand until early in the third period when Dylan Deegan scored from the slot with Josh Black and Dante Coulter adding assists.
Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities in the five-minute sudden death overtime.
Fullerton won the Bluenose tournament as a midget hockey player in 1987, but said winning as a coach was even sweeter.
"It's my first head coaching job and it's been great working with my other four coaches," he said. "Each coach brings something different to the table. We all have different jobs and they did a great job passing their knowledge on to the kids."
The Ramblers went 2-1 in the round robin, opening Friday with a 3-2 win over the Truro Bearcats.
Alex Griffiths, Coulter and Kyle Walker scored for Cumberland with Griffiths adding an assist. Carter McNutt scored for Truro.

In their other game, the Ramblers defeated Western Valley as Chatfield had three goals and Cheverie and Nate Stone each scored once. Walker and Graden Chitty added assists.
Owen St. Nicholas scored for Western Valley.
Fullerton said both goaltenders, Greg Ripley and Dawson Gallagher, had a great tournament.
"They compliment each other and work really well together," said Fullerton.
"The team has had a bumpy road with injuries and suspensions but we got through it by being a family and sticking together," added Fullerton. "This is a total team effort from the very top to the very bottom."
He also thanked the parents and their sponsor.
"The parents have been great and the support of Amherst Pharmasave has made the team that much more positive," said Fullerton.
