BROOKDALE – Two fires last week at abandoned homes on Nappan Road in Brookdale are considered suspicious in nature.

This early morning fire was the second fire the Amherst Fire Department had to battle in less than 24 hours. Both fires were across the bridge on Nappan Road from one another.

“The fires occurred within 24 hours of each other and were in the same area of Brookdale,” said Travise Dow, community policing officer with the Cumberland District RCMP. “Both houses were vacant at the time and no injuries were reported.”

Firefighters were called to the first house fire Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. and to the second house fire Friday at 12:30 a.m.

“The RCMP is continuing to investigate both fires with the assistance of Amherst Fire Department, as well as the Truemanville and Leicester fire departments,” added Dow.

Both fires were on the south side of the Nappan Road, directly beside the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Friday morning fire was on the east side of the Nappan Road bridge that crosses the highway, and Wednesday’s was on the west side of the of the bridge.

Dow said people who own homes in rural areas that they no longer live in should keep them secured and visit the house on a regular basis to make sure they haven’t been broken into, and to make sure there aren’t any fire hazards in the home.

Anyone with any information about the two fires is asked to contact the RCMP at 667-3859 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
