AMHERST – Firefighters battled a grass fire behind the Comfort Inn and KFC on South Albion Street for about one hour Monday night.

The fire started about 200 yards behind the Comfort Inn but high winds quickly pushed the fire to the field behind the KFC.

Firefighters were called to the scene at about 7:30 p.m. and cleared the scene at 8:30 p.m.

Smoke from the fire was billowing across South Albion Street, and a large number of people parked their cars in the Nova Scotia Community College parking lot to watch firefighters fight the blaze.

If bylaws are in place and enforced for land owners to keep grass and bushes mowed short by summer's end (ie last September) .. things like this will be less likely to take place. Other dangerous places -- along race track road, along marsh, and even downtown like Aliant old electric building.
