AMHERST – The Amherst Regional High School Cheerleading squad hosted their first-ever competition Wednesday night at ARHS.

“It was kind of nerve wracking but once the music started it was smooth sailing,” said Morgan Mitchell, ARHS Grade 12 student.

ARHS was competing against Auburn High School, which is in Cole Harbour.

The ARHS squad came in second to Auburn but Grade 9 cheerleaders, Kaley Gilroy, Shae Nickerson and Haley Goodwin were proud of how their team performed.

The girls said they nailed everything they tried.

It was their last competition of the season, and although Mitchell is graduating, Gilroy, Nickerson and Goodwin say they will return to the team next year.

ARHS athletic director Fred Gould was at the competition and said it was the first time he’s every seen cheerleaders perform.

“I hope they will hold more competitions in the area, and I hope this won’t be our last,” said Gould. “We’re hoping for an invitational tournament here next year to help promote the sport.”
