Open house, swap and sales held ahead of planned December 14 opening

WENTWORTH-A lack of snow did not deter hundreds of people from attending Ski Wentworth’s annual open house, ski swap, equipment and craft sales on Saturday.

“We had one of our largest turnouts ever for the annual open house, ski swap & equipment sale and craft Sale,” stated Ski Wentworth general manager Leslie Wilson. “Hundreds of ski and snowboard enthusiasts turned out to get great deals on new and used equipment, apparel and to do some Christmas shopping.”

According to Wilson, the day’s main attraction was the ski swap, an event ran by volunteers of the Canadian Ski Patrol. A portion of sales are donated to the CSP.

“Retailers Aerobics First, Entity, HAF, Hub Cycle and Cleves all set up shop in the lodge with sales on the latest equipment,” said Wilson. “It's also a great chance for skiers to pick up their season passes and beat the rush at the beginning of the season.  Many took advantage of the no HST season pass sale.”

Ski Wentworth has had a busy off-season since it closed for the 2012-2013 season on April 1. Its major project was extended snowmaking on the Hurricane trail.

“Reinvesting in snowmaking equipment is our lifeline,” stated Wilson. “The weather is too risky to rely on just natural snow alone.”

Sub-zero temperatures proved to be conducive to snow-making on Sunday.

“Snowmaking season is officially underway,” said Wilson on Sunday. “We fired up the snow guns at 8:00 am, one of the earliest, if not the earliest, starts to snowmaking ever. The planned opening day is (Saturday) December 14, weather and conditions permitting.”

Last year, Ski Wentworth opened for the 2012-2013 season on December 18.
