Proceeds to support care for caregivers at Christmas

The East Cumberland Lodge's Sparkle of Light Campaign is supporting the purchase of items for the facility's palliative care patients.

Proceeds will help to furnish a private respite area complete with living room, bedroom, private washroom, and kitchen for family members remaining on site during the palliative end stage of their loved one at the lodge.

PUGWASH – When a resident at East Cumberland Lodge has entered the end stage of palliative care, and it is anticipated that the person will pass in the coming week or less, the lodge offers the attending family the opportunity to remain on site in order to be close to their loved one.

Sometimes this can be for multiple days or nights.

“Proceeds from this year’s event will us to furnish a private respite area on our lower level for the visiting family to use while on site,” said Joe Gauthier, lodge administrator. “This will allow the family member(s) a private area to use for physical rest and recovery while they start to cope with the emotional impact of the impending loss of their loved one.”

Proceeds will help to furnish a private respite area complete with living room, bedroom, private washroom, and kitchen for family members remaining on site during the palliative end stage of their loved one at the lodge.

Last year, the event supported the renovation of one of the smaller dining rooms, provided rocking chairs, and helped to fund recreational activities for residents.

A registered Canadian charity, each year East Cumberland Lodge hosts its major fundraiser called Sparkle of Light with funds being used to support items and activities that otherwise would not be funded.

In its 11th year, the proceeds of this year’s campaign will also assist with purchasing

occupational and physiotherapy equipment, help to support falls prevention and reduction programs, and recreational program supplies for resident activities.

The light-up event will be hosted on Tuesday, Dec. 3 starting at 6:30 p.m. when the names of those being honoured and remembered will be read prior to the all external lights being turned on for the holiday season.

Donations given up by the end of December are able to qualify for charitable taxation receipts for the 2013 taxation year.

Located in Pugwash, the lodge officially opened in 1975 and has been home to more than 1,100 individuals since that time. A 74-bed long-term care facility it is licensed by the Nova Scotia Department of Health & Wellness to provide Level 1 and 2 care.
