Martin scores hat trick against Wildcats

AMHERST – The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers earned six of a possible six points on the weekend.

“Earning six points was well deserved,” said Jim Bottomley, Ramblers coach and general manager. “The boys worked hard all three games and it helped us take a jump in the standings, putting us four points up on the Valley.”

The Ramblers have 20 points to the Valley’s 16. The Yarmouth Mariners lead the Martime Hockey League with 26 points. The Ramblers beat the Mariners 3-1 on Saturday at Amherst Stadium, downed the Lumberjacks 4-2 on Friday in Bridgewater, and returned home on Sunday where the beat the Valley Wildcats 5-2.

The Wildcats scored the only goal in the first period, but Ross Martin tied the game 1-1 less than a minute into the second period off an assist from Daniel Walsh.

The Valley then took a 2-1 lead, but the period ended with the Ramblers up 3-2 after goals scored by Robert Davis and Martin’s second of the night.

Walsh assisted on both goals, and Ben MacDonald had an assist on the Martin goal.

“It was a big team effort,” said Wade Kropp after the game. “We came out hard and got behind, but the boys kept it simple, rallied back and won.”

Bottomley says the Ramblers started a little slow, "but as the game went on we started playing as a team again and things started to work.”

Up 3-2 for the entire third period, the Valley pulled their goaltender with about two minutes left in the game and the Ramblers scored two empty netters, winning the game 5-2.

Martin scored the first empty-netter off an assist from MacDonald, and Zack MacEwen scored the second off passes from Blake Millman and Kyle Beckwith.

Ramblers goaltender Richard Tingley faced a total of 21 shots on the night, while his teammates had 32 shots at Wildcats goaltender Blade Mann-Dixon.

Winning three games in three nights is never easy.

“We played physical all three games. Saturday was a very physical game and we were able to come back and respond again,” said Bottomley. “Off ice conditioning down at the YMCA two nights a week has certainly paid off.”

Travis Howe said his team has a lot of heart, and Kropp agrees.

“We didn’t give up when we got down,” said Kropp. “We’re really starting to come together. We’re family and we look out for one another.”

674 people attended the game.

The Ramblers travel to Dieppe to play the Commandos on Wednesday, and then are back home Saturday where they will host the Pictou County Weeks Crushers who are second in the MHL standings with 25 points.
