Meeting transplant team in a few weeks

A match has been found on the donor registry for Amherst's Rod Wilson.

A match has been found for Amherst's Rod Wilson, who in August began a public campaign urging people to consider becoming bone marrow donors.

AMHERST – Rod Wilson has found his match.

The popular 41-year-old manager of an Amherst lounge learned Friday that a match has been found for a bone marrow transplant.

“I am beyond excited right now. This is the best feeling I have had in months,” Wilson announced on his Facebook page Friday afternoon.

Wilson said he got a call from his doctor letting him know that a match has been found on the database.

“I don’t know much else right now until I meet the transplant team in a couple of weeks,” Wilson said.

In August, Wilson turned to social media asking people to consider registering with One Match to be a bone marrow donor. He said he was doing it for his eight-year-old daughter, and even if a match weren’t located for him it could help someone else.

There are between 700 and 1,000 Canadians on the waiting list for a bone marrow transplant.

Representatives from One Match were in Amherst last week holding a registration session and collecting swabs, especially among the target group of men ages 17 to 35.

More than 300 registered for the program and provided swabs.

Wilson was first diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma three-and-a-half years ago. After 18 months of chemotherapy, he underwent a stem cell transplant using his own bone marrow.

He was in remission until this summer when he noticed a lump on his chest and discovered that his cancer had returned with a much more aggressive form.
