As a concerned citizen, I'm adding my voice to those who have already written regarding the proposed elimination of the STC Service between Eastend-Swift Current and Eastend-Mossbank.
I feel this is a valuable, necessary service the taxpayers in this area can not afford to lose. I think more than the number of passengers using this service needs to be taken into consideration.
As taxpayers in this area, we will be contributing through our tax dollars to the building of the new Regina Football Stadium. Albeit, it will not come out of the coffers of the Department of Highways, but since there is only one taxpayer, it will still be part of our contribution. Every time that SaskPower and SaskEnergy donate new turf or upgrade stands in the Regina Stadium, that involves taxpayer dollars. Does it not make sense that a bus service to an isolated area should also be subsidized by taxpayer dollars? How are the royalties from our natural resources directed? Our corner of the Province contributes greatly to that.
I take exception to the comments made by Cypress Hills MLA Wayne Elhard in the Southwest Booster dated April 11, 2013. He states that "The hardship cases are the ones that bother me, cause me some concern". How concerned is he? Will he be one of the volunteers to drive people to the city where they can catch a bus? How does he think people who are ill, and not likely working, can afford to "hire somebody" to drive them? He further states "There may even be a private sector operator who would like to establish a more consistent service". Would funding be available to assist someone in this regard? How much might that cost? It would seem that as long as the cost doesn't hurt the bottom line of operating costs of the STC, it is fine to eliminate this service. I would caution the present Government to remember that Rural Saskatchewan counts and there will be another election.
I am asking for public support on this issue. I would appreciate it if people would continue to show their concern through letters to the Highway Traffic Board. Please remember that if our service can be eliminated, it can happen elsewhere in the Province.
