Vikings reclaim provincial championship in close game

KENTVILLE – The Amherst Regional High School Senior Vikettes are repeat provincial champions.

They accomplished the feat after defeating the North Kings Education Centre Titans 70-28 during Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation Division 2 Girls Basketball Champions at Central Kings High School over the weekend.

“As coaches we are so happy when the girls can achieve the goals they set for themselves,” said Vikettes coach Gillian Ellis. “They did exactly that this weekend by winning provincials for the second year in a row.”  

“They brought everything they have learned all season together this weekend and it paid off. A team like this is rare and everyone involved could feel how special it was.”

Danielle Young led the Vikettes in the championship game with 20 points, followed by Natasha Gouchie with 16, Ashley MacEachern with 10, Paige Lewis with nine, Lauren MacEachern with six, Emily Pipes with five, and Mia Furlong and Lauren Chitty with two points each.

“We are a part of something big, a family, and we finished on top; the perfect ending,” said Ellis.

The Vikettes opened up play on Friday afternoon with a 75-46 win over the Central Kings Gators.

Young again led the Vikettes with 22 points, followed by Gouchie and Lauren MacEachern with 12 points each, Chitty with eight points, Lewis with seven, Furlong with five, Pipes with four, and Maitland Terrio and Ryanne Belyea with two points each.

The Vikettes won their second game of the tournament with an 81-39 win over the Millwood Knights on Friday night.

Ashley MacEachern led the Vikettes with 15 points, followed by Lewis with 12, Furlong and Gouchie with 10 each, Young with nine, Chitty with seven, Lauren MacEachern with six points, and Alexa Thompson with five, and Terrio and Belyea with four points each.


The NSSAF Division 2 boy’s basketball banner is coming back to Amherst.

The ARHS Vikings defeated Central Kings 52-51 in Middleton on Saturday to win the provincial championship in what was a nail-biter right down to the final buzzer with the Vikings coming from behind to win after three Central Kings’ starters fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Senior Ryan Thompson, who missed most of last season with a broken leg, Logan Dowe and Adrian VanVulpen each scored 11 points for Amherst in the win while Shaddy Mohamad had nine points for the Vikings.

Caleb Hayes and Jason Morse each scored three points for Amherst, while Jacob Harnish and Willie Legere each chipped in two.

Amherst moved into the final with a convincing 89-54 win over Kings-Edgehill on Friday night with Hayes scoring 19 points and Thompson adding 17 in the win.

Morse with 13, VanVulpen had nine, Dowe, Harnish, Momhad and Josh Lee each had six, Matt McCrossin had three and Blake Thompson two.

The Vikings opened the tournament with a 74-29 win over the Millwood Knights as Morse had 15 points and Marcus Kindervarter had 11 for Amherst. Dowe with 10, VanVulpen with eight, Mohamad with seven, Ryan Thompson and McCrossin with six, Hayes with five and Legere, Blake Thompson and Harnish with two apiece rounded out scoring for Amherst.
